What is the ecoegg Laundry Egg?

The ecoegg Laundry Egg is an eco-friendly alternative to traditional laundry detergents and fabric softeners that is suitable for use in all washing machines including front loaders, top loaders and twin tubs. The ecoegg itself is a reusable egg-shaped container made from 100% recyclable soft, durable plastic rubber (so it's gentle on your washing machine). Inside the ecoegg there are two types of natural cleaning pellets that work together to effectively clean your clothes. To use the ecoegg Laundry egg simply place it in the drum of your washing machine with your clothes and proceed as normal (detailed usage instructions below).

How does the ecoegg work?

The ecoegg Laundry Egg uses two types of natural pellets that work together to create an effective clean.

Pellet 1: Tourmaline ceramic pellets weaken the adhesive forces between dirt and your clothes fabric and are dark in colour.

Pellet 2: Mineral pellets naturally ionise the oxygen molecules in your washing machine water. The molecules penetrate deeply into the clothes fabric causing dirt to be lifted without fading colours or damaging clothing fibres and are white in colour.

Why use the ecoegg Laundry Egg?

Better for the environment

The environment and ecoegg’s impact on it is central to the ecoegg company’s ethos.

Cruelty-free

The ecoegg Laundry Egg and all other associated products by the ecoegg company have always been and will always be 100% cruelty-free. Animal testing is banned in the UK on finished household products. However, this ban does not cover chemical ingredients when less than half the amount of them are used in the product or testing is required for regulatory purposes. Sidestep hidden cruelty-free pitfalls with the ecoegg Laundry Egg and ensure laundry day is kind on you and our furry friends.

Free From Harsh Chemicals

Traditional laundry detergents can contain a bunch of nasties which have been shown to have far-reaching environmental impacts on aquatic wildlife. Issues arising from detergents can include the degradation of fish external mucus layers that protect them from bacteria and parasites, gill damage and increased algal blooms. The ecoegg Laundry Egg and pellets do not contain any harsh chemicals, petrochemicals, optimisers, bleaches or ammonia, making it much safer for our waterways. To date, ecoegg estimates it has stopped over 700,000 tonnes of washing detergent from entering the UK water system.

Using the ecoegg Laundry Egg also removes the need for fabric softeners and conditioners that may contain harsh chemicals and infamous palm oil (a known contributor to rainforest deforestation). The ecoegg Laundry Egg naturally softens your laundry through an increased water pH level as a consequence of the ionizing effect of its mineral pellets on the oxygen molecules in the laundry water.

Packaging

Laundry detergent and fabric softener clean our clothes but also leave a huge mess behind in the form of plastic bottles. Approximately 35.8 million plastic bottles are thrown away every single day in the UK and a million plastic bottles are bought every minute worldwide. With only around half of these making it to recycling in the UK, the low rate of recycled plastic items produced, and all the added problems of contamination and confusion over what can be recycled, it’s usually better to skip the issue altogether. The ecoegg Laundry Egg is reusable and zero waste with a 10 year guarantee on non-consumable parts. The ecoegg Laundry Egg refill natural pellets pack lasts 210 washes – check out the video below to see how many plastic bottles you could be saving!

Once the ecoegg Laundry Egg has reached the end of its long life it is also 100% recyclable. All ecoegg products are packaged in FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified paper and board and come marked with clear and concise recycling instructions. Only vegetable-based inks are used in ecoegg’s printing and packaging.

Environmental & Social Values

Ecoegg lives and breathes their environmental values. They ensure as much of their industrial and office waste is recycled as possible and are constantly looking for ways to reduce their carbon footprint. They are also focused on the community. They give funding and support to Water for Kids, a charity helping provide safe drinking water for communities across Africa, and have teamed up with RIPPLE Africa, a charity that works to preserve the forests in Malawi.

How do you use the ecoegg Laundry Egg?

Using your egg for the first time

1. Your ecoegg Laundry Egg has arrived! Before you use the ecoegg you must fill it with the included natural pellets.

2. To open the ecoegg grip the two halves and press the button in on the lower section of the larger half of the egg. Twist the larger half to the right until the two marked triangles on the egg’s halves meet up.

3. Pull the halves apart.

4. Fill the larger half of the egg with three packets of the included white mineral pellets and one packet of the included dark coloured ceramic tourmaline pellets.

5. Put the two halves together again making sure to line up the marked triangles on each half of the egg. Twist the larger half to the left until the smaller half's triangle is lined up with the dot on the larger half and the button clicks into place.

6. Place the ecoegg Laundry Egg in the drum of your washing machine on top of your laundry and wash as per normal. Simple!

7. Once the wash cycle is finished remove the ecoegg Laundry Egg from the washing machine and leave out to dry until needed again. If doing multiple washes the ecoegg does not need to be dried in-between.

Refilling after 72 washes

To maintain optimal cleaning power the ecoegg Laundry Egg will need to be refilled with one packet of white mineral pellets approximately every 72 washes.

1. Open the ecoegg as per the instructions in the above section. Do not remove the dark coloured ceramic pellets or remaining white mineral pellets.

2. Pour one packet (you get three packets in each ecoegg refill box to give you a total of 210 washes) into the ecoegg.

3. If there is not enough room in the ecoegg remove only as many old white mineral pellets as needed to fit the new pellets in. The ecoegg works best when it is as full as possible.

4. Close and use as per the instructions in the above section.

How long does the ecoegg Laundry Egg last?

The ecoegg is a great zero waste laundry cleaning alternative with non-consumable parts guaranteed for 10 years!

When do you need to refill the ecoegg?

After approximately 72 washes, when the white mineral pellets are half dissolved, or if you notice the ecoegg’s cleaning power reduce.

Will the ecoegg harm my washing machine?

The ecoegg Laundry Egg is made out of soft, durable rubber. This means it is gentle on your washing machine and can be used in all types of washing machines.

What water temperature should I use when washing with the ecoegg?

The ecoegg works in any temperature, including cold washes, up to 60 degrees Celsius. Washing above 60 degrees Celsius will significantly reduce the cleaning pellets lifetime (and also uses much more energy creating a larger carbon footprint per wash).

Do I need to use the rinse cycle with the ecoegg?

The ecoegg Laundry Egg leaves behind much less residue than traditional laundry detergents. This means you can save energy, time and water by skipping the washing machine rinse cycle if you want!

How do you hand wash with the ecoegg?

Simply pre-soak the ecoegg in the clothes washing water for 20 minutes prior and proceed as per normal.

Can I wash my delicates with the ecoegg?

Yes, however using a laundry bag and washing on the ‘delicate' setting is recommended. For valuable delicates, hand washing is suggested.

Washing machine smells

The ecoegg has a low fragrance so it’s gentle on you and the environment. This means it will not mask smells that can build-up in your washing machine due to long-term chemical detergent residue. If this occurs detox your washing machine by running an empty wash on the 90 degrees Celsius or ‘boil’ setting with some white vinegar in the dispensing tray. If any smells persist this method may need to be repeated or your washing machine pipes may require a clean.

Tips to ensure your ecoegg Laundry Egg is performing at it’s best

Do not overload your washing machine, the ecoegg needs room to work.

Do not set your washing machine to low water use, the ecoegg needs water to work (but you can skip the rinse cycle!).

As with traditional laundry detergents, tough stains require extra love. For extra tough stains pre-treat or use an in-wash stain remover – this will not affect the ecoegg’s performance.

The ecoegg does not contain harsh bleaches (yay!) so if your whites require a little extra brightening an eco-friendly laundry bleach can be used – this will not affect the ecoegg’s performance.

With all of the ecoegg Laundry Egg’s reviews and benefits it’s easy to see why it has been awarded the Queen’s Award for ‘Enterprise in Innovation 2016’, Allergy UK’s ‘Allergy Friendly Product Award’, the Climate Week Award for ‘Best New Product or Technology’, the Prima Baby & Pregnancy Magazine’s ‘ Gold Award for Baby Skincare Product’ and the NatWest Venus Award for ‘Best Green Business'!
